Looking at the dowel, I’m thinking it’s a 1/2″ dowel.  The top is called a finial.

Finials

My dowels are 3/4″, so I’m looking for a finial with a 3/4″ hole drilled into it.  The standard holes are 1/2″ and 3/8″.   The next option would be to find finials that have screws on the bottom so they can be screwed onto the dowel.  Something like this.

It’s very hard to find finials in my area.  I’ve checked Home Depot, Ace Hardware and Lowes.  They have finials that are either too small or too huge (for bedposts and curtain rods).  I’ve also checked craft stores like Michaels.

From left to right: The tall finial is 3 9/16 tall with a 3/8 inch peg. Cost is $2.69. The middle one is 2 7/16 tall, 1/2 inch peg. Only .59 each. The last one is 2 7/8 inch tall with a 3/8 peg, .75 each. The first and third could be used if you could drill a 3/8 hole in the center of the dowels and then tap these in. The center one is just too big. The others have a large enough base to cover the end of the dowel rod. Or. . . . the peg part could be cut off and then a 3/4 hole drilled into the finial. It would be close but could be done.

I really like the third one.  2-7/8″ tall and a 3/8 tenon.  This would be perfect if the tenon was taken off and a screw drilled into it…. then screwed into the 3/4″ dowel.

Now… to find a base.

Base

The base looks to be about 3.5″ to 4″.  I’ve found 3″ wood turned discs but they are only 1/8″ thick.  Too thin.  I’m looking for something thicker   At least 1/2″ thick.

I’d love it to look like this but beggers can’t be choosy.  (this is just a graphic representation)

How to get the screw on the finial…

Ah, the trick is to nip off the tenon, sand lightly, then drill a pilot hole and put in the double screw thing. When ready to attach to the dowel rod, also drill a pilot hole and then screw that rascal in.

Update 3/10/15…

Joseph was able to drill a 3/8″ hole in the 3/4″ dowel to accomodate the tenon on the finial.

It may need a 1″ or 1-1/4″ disc between the dowel and the finial to make it look more conform.

These are called dowel screws.  Screws on both ends.  They are also called Baluster Fasteners.

Why does the finial have to be wood?  Why can’t it be a lamp finial?  Like these…

Finials for lamps are a standard size.  Figure out what the standard size is and order the screw the same size so the finial will fit.  Make sure one side is flat… not sharp.

3/8″ opening – 1/8″ ip.   I think IP means thread size.

A key component in most lamps is threaded steel tube, often brass-plated, called “lamp pipe.” The standard size is 1/8 IP; the IP stands for “iron pipe;” the sizes belong to the 19th century Briggs Standard of Wrought-Iron Pipe Dimensions, to which seamless brass and copper tubing was also made.1 Although 1/8 IP tube is by far the most common size in lamps, three IP and one non-IP size are used:

1/8 IP 0.405 inches outer diameter, fits in a 716 inch hole, threaded 27 threads to the inch.
¼ IP 0.540 inches outer diameter.
3/8 IP 0.675 inches outer diameter.
This was the size of the outlets for gas lighting; the system of sizes used for the pipes that brought gas to gas lights was adopted for electric lights. In older ceiling fixtures (the outlet box is perfectly round instead of square) the light is attached to a 3/8 IP stud, just as a gas light was. Today an adapter, called a “hickey,” is used to get from the 3/8 IP stud to the fixture’s 1/8 IP.

In addition to the IP sizes, a smaller tube is available,

¼-27 Unlike the IP sizes its outer diameter actually is ¼ inch, but its screw thread is not standard (National Fine thread is ¼-28). The standard thread for 1/8 IP pipe, however, is 27 threads per inch.

The locknuts, reducers, adapters, and so on for use with lamp pipe are specialty items; ordinary nuts won’t work. Fortunately many hardware and craft stores carry a large selection of lamp parts.

Harps are made in heights from 7 to 12 inches in steps of ½ inch, and then by whole inches to 15 inches. The stud at the top of the harp, onto which the finial is screwed to hold down a shade, has a ¼-27 thread.

Machine screws in lamps are almost always 8-32.

Update… Nope these screws don’t work in a lamp finial.  The threads per inch are wrong.   These screws would work for door knobs.
