This is what I wanted but I didn’t want to pay for 5. I only wanted 1 this size. Also, when it gets here, I take a chance that the bands might not fit. I didn’t want to pay $60 for something that will just take up space if it didn’t fit. I’m really “space” poor and need to take that into consideration.
EACH MEASURES AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 5 1/2″ , WITH A WINDING AREA OF 4 1/2″. ROUND ENDS OF EACH SPOOL MEASURE 3″ IN DIAMETER, WITH A 3/8″ HOLE THAT GOES FROM END TO END.
I should just stop being lazy and go to the craft store (Michael’s) but I don’t trust myself in there. Especially if I bring the children along. If I get some “test” material from Amazon, I can go to the craft store later and get exactly what I need and exercise TUNNEL VISION.
On AMAZON, I got the following.
Darice 9162-08 Unfinished Natural Wood Craft Dowel Rod, 3/4-Inch – $3.86/3
Wood Turning Shapes Value Pack-Circle 3″X1/8″ 6/Pkg – $5.29
I was able to cut 2 sizes using one dowel. 5″ and 7″, attach the discs to make spools.
The 5″ spool is wound with 2 yards x 4.7″ wide linen band.
The 7″ spool is wound with 1 yard x 7″ wide linen band.
I estimate 3″ discs on each end will accomodate up to 4 yards.
The discs are 1/8″ thick. I would have liked the discs to be thicker. There are discs that are thicker but circumference is 2-3/8″ x 1/4. These discs would hold about 3 yards… which is reasonable.
The discs on Amazon are over $7 for 2. At Joann’s fabrics they are $2.49 for 2. I have no idea why they’re so expensive on Amazon.

Attaching the Band
A question becomes, how to attach the band to the to the dowel. Dual stick tape? Regular tape? I wonder if a groove can be made on the dowel before attaching the discs?
I just remembered I have Stitchery tape somewhere.
